Art Trip to Florence
Art Trip to Florence two Level 12 students formed part of a group of students who attended this year’s art trip to Florence organised by St Martin’s College. Yu Dong and Veronica Micallef are currently studying Art A level at our sixth form and throughout this trip they had the opportunity to see some important art works that form part of their syllabus. The trip also included visits to the Uffizzi, the Pitti Palace and the Accademia Museum. Our students also participated in a number of workshops at the Leonardo da Vinci Art Academy in Florence where they were taught how to make a tempera painting, a fresco and engraving. They also had the opportunity to observe the original famous Florence Baptistry doors and Michelangelo's "Deposition" at the Museo dell Opera dell' Duomo. Veronica and Yu visited a temporary exhibition at the Strozzi Palace, 'Verrochio, the Master of Leonardo', that included over 120 works including paintings, sculptures and drawings, with loans from over seventy important museums and private collections around the world. A trip to Pisa and Siena also formed part of this trip.
Danish students visit SMC Sixth Form
Danish students visit SMC Sixth Form A group of students from Københavns åbne Gymnasium, Copenhagen, Denmark visited St Martin’s College Sixth Form as part of their class trip to Malta. The visit started with a presentation about Malta, at the end of which the Danish students engaged in an enriching intercultural exchange with St Martin’s College Sixth Form students. The Danish students then attended a number of different lessons at sixth form. This was the second time a Danish school visited St Martin’s College Sixth Form this scholastic year.
European Money Week
European Money Week Level 12 Economics A level students attended a very informative lecture on cyber security and online payment security. This lecture was hosted by Mr. Daniel German who gave an insight on how susceptible people are to information theft. They were shown how hackers can and often do eventually manage to break through and access sensitive data that puts them at risk. Cybercrime is very real, and it was explained to them that hackers have a plethora of ways of accessing their information, not only through their PCs but especially through mobile devices and other household devices that can be remotely controlled through connections to the internet. They were also introduced to a number of measures they should take to protect their sensitive information and steps that are a must when using both social media and when making purchases online. Students participated actively by asking questions and prompting further discussion on the issues discussed. At the end of the talk, Mr. German also gave our students a handout which included key points from his presentation about important precautions they should take as well as key hints regarding online passwords and interaction on social media networks. Throughout the very informative and interesting presentation, our students, were also shown a number of video clips on cybersecurity giving them an insight into real theft of personal data, the way hackers work and on why it is so important to be cautious when using the internet in today’s world
Climate Change Awareness
Climate Change Awareness Today, students at St Martin’s College Sixth Form gathered to raise awareness about climate change and its countless detrimental effects on people. Climate strikes are being held in more than 100 schools around the world on 15th March. Inspired by Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, students are calling for action on global warming. Mark Anthony Kuflewicz and Thomas Vella spoke to their fellow students about the importance of taking immediate action to reduce waste and increase climate change resilience. The students then planted an olive tree as a symbol of hope for climate change.
Sixth Form Open Evening
Sixth Form Open Evening Open Evening was held at St Martin’s College Sixth Form on Thursday, 14th March. The College opened its doors for prospective students and their parents to visit the premises, talk to subject teachers about their choices and register for the next scholastic year. Newly registered students also had the opportunity to speak to current students about life at the College and also discuss their career preferences with the College’s Career Advisor. Mr Anthony Abela, Senior Leader, Sixth Form, discussed specific courses of interest with individual students. Prospective students were also informed about the broad range of activities held throughout the year. Registrations for the scholastic year 2019-2020 are now open.

Sixth Form students visit the European Parliament Office in Valletta
Sixth Form students visit the European Parliament Office in Valletta A group of St Martin’s College Sixth Form students recently visited the European Parliament Office in Valletta as part of the Euroscola programme. Our students attended a presentation called “This time I’m Voting”, informing them of the importance of casting their vote during the European Parliament elections which will be held next May. Throughout the morning, they were also introduced to the work of the European Parliament and had an opportunity to express themselves on issues that are important to them as young Europeans
Sixth Form students participate in a Panel Discussion
Sixth Form students participate in a Panel Discussion Students at St Martin’s College Sixth Form studying Marketing, Sociology, Geography and Economics, recently participated in a panel discussion with Ms Michela Fenech and Ms Tammy Fenech, members of the non-profit organisation, Fashion Revolution, as well Ms Maria Farrugia, Co-Founder of the KulKul Farm, Bali, and Ms Greta Muscat Azzopardi, Co-Director of Amber Sparks, Malta. Throughout the event a variety of issues related to the world of consumption were debated. Panel members and students discussed sustainability, the realities of sweatshop workers, social justice, the intensification of farming, as well as the environmental impact of fast fashion. Students had an opportunity to question the way their own clothes are sourced, produced, consumed and discarded. They also explored ways in which, as consumers, they can make more educated choices.
