SMC Art Trip To Florence

SMC Art Trip To Florence

Scholastic Year 2014 - 2015

A number of St Martin’s College senior and Sixth Form students, together with their art teachers, recently visited Florence on an art trip. They spent a week in beautiful, historical Florence improving their artistic historical skills as well as broadening their culinary horizons.

The programme proved to be an exciting and informative one. Practical sessions in the Bottega workshop involved hands-on attempts at fresco and tempera painting including the application of gold-leaf. Trips to museums and churches were also included in the programme.

The students were also lucky to attend two excellent exhibitions featuring works by Modigliani and his friends at Palazzo Blu in Pisa, and another one about Picasso and Spanish Modernity at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.

The team also had time to visit Pisa’s famous Bapistry and Duomo learning about the intricate sculptural programme of Nicola Pisano and his son’s world-famous pulpits, an important part of the sixth formers’ art history syllabus. One other day was spent discovering the art historical gems in the quaint city of Siena.
