SMC Book Launch

Scholastic Year 2014 - 2015

On Tuesday 2nd December, St Martin’s College launched its first publication entitled Taking Flight: A collection of short stories and poems by St Martin’s College students.
This collection of short stories and poetry explores the world of the teenage mind. Composed by students from levels 7 to 10, it deals with a spectrum of themes and ideas whether of loss, nostalgia, aspiration or the power of life experiences.
During this celebration of budding talent, award winning English novelist, Jim Crace, addressed the young authors, their parents, fellow students and teachers. Speeches were also given by Ms Bernie Mizzi, Director and Laura Sciberras, coordinator of the School of Excellence Writing group, who had taught the students and encouraged them to produce their best work. The young authors themselves then treated the audience to a few poetic and narrative readings from the publication.
The idea for the publication was originally conceived as the final product of a School of Excellence Writing Course, as a place to showcase the aptitude of students gifted in the area of writing. Starting in 2010, it has been four years of selection, editing and design to make this idea become reality. It was a labour of love for all involved but the final publication is one which St Martin’s College is proud to present as a collection which showcases the creativity and talent of its students.

A few words from Professor Ivan Callus:

I enjoyed the evening today, Bernie — in fact, it’s given me a boost, as it provided ample evidence of how Creative Writing can touch young people and it was good to see that so strongly and warmly in evidence. Jim Crace was very impressed!
