Professional Learning Closing down the school has not stopped professional learning taking place! On Friday, as was in our plans, the Level 1 team had a session with Dr Charmaine Bonello, B & B Early Years consultant, about planning for project based learning within an Emergent curriculum approach. All staff found this very fruitful and have used this new learning when designing the e-learning programme which will shortly be sent to all our Level 1 pupils. All our teams at every level in every department have planned for the next 9 days and shall soon be updating our CHSMC community.

UPDATE - SCHOOL CLOSURE Dear CHSMC Community, Following the Prime Minister’s press conference this afternoon please note that our schools will also be closed as from tomorrow. We will still be closed for the following two weeks as previously announced in our last update. We will of course, inform you should there be any further decisions. SMC Prize Day

SMC Prize Day Every year a prize-giving ceremony is organised in which St Martin's College students are awarded recognition for their outstanding efforts, qualities and achievements. Prizes are awarded for placing first, second or third in any one particular area of learning, while a number of special prizes are also awarded for qualities such as leadership, outstanding performance, kindness, perseverance and marked improvement. Students and parents at the ceremony were entertained by a number of brilliant performances by SMC students. Prizes were distributed to students by Mr Steve Cachia, Director General (Curriculum, Lifelong Learning and Employability) together with Ms Bernie, school Director. We thank all staff and students who helped in the organisation of such a successful event as well as all who attended. We congratulate all prize winners for their outstanding achievements. Finally, we thank our young performers and those who supported them in their performances.

Lego League Expo

Lego League Expo A group of Level 5 pupils recently participated in the First Lego League Expo: Mission Moon held at Esplora. Through enquiry-based learning pupils were tasked with exploring and solving problems in order to be able to live on the moon. The team named Galaxy Gallery and led by Ms Margaret Fonde, were awarded medals and a certificate of participation. Well done Galaxy Gallery!

SMC's Contributions Every year St Martin’s College chooses to support various charities. This year SMC shall be supporting the Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) and Smile with Jerome Foundation. Level 5 Pupils Visit Golden Care Retirement Home In preparation for the festive season, each of our Level 5 classes visited the Golden Care retirement home to spend some time with the elderly residents. The children played games, sang carols and even exchanged gifts - a wonderful beginning to a collaborative relationship between Chiswick House School and Golden Care.

ICSEI 2020 Conference

ICSEI 2020 Conference Ms Bernie Mizzi, together with Professor Grace Grima and Senior-Middle leaders Ms Esmeralda Zerafa and Dr Jeannine Debattista attended the ICSEI 2020 (International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement) Conference in Morocco. Over 1000 participants, ranging from about 80 countries, participated in the 33rd conference which was held in Africa for the first time. Together they shared experiences and exchanged knowledge and best practices on quality education and school improvement. This year’s theme was titled “Education, Youth Empowerment, and Sustainable Development: Collaboration between the Global North and South to Improve Education Quality”. Ms Bernie and Ms Esmeralda, with Professor Grace Grima, as critical friend, presented in the Innovate Session on ‘Collaborative Professionalism in Action: A Whole School Digital Transformation Project Impacting Adult and Young Learner. The presentation focused upon CHSMC’s 3-year plan to bring about the best use of technology in active and inspiring learning opportunities. ‘Impactful Change Processes: Placing Malta on the Maths Mastery Map,’ was the title of the second presentation that Ms Bernie Mizzi and Ms Esmeralda Zerafa gave during another Innovate Session at ICSEI 2020 in Marrakesh.
